November 2007

14th Nov - Wed

Raid:- South  Foreland

Report:

A group of ten seasoned rotarians, plus one 'new boy' , went to South Foreland RC, Dover and found the very pleasant venue 'The Bluebird'. The three course meal was very tasty and service was prompt yet not hurried. The hospitality box was used by host members to donate a £1 and share their good news announcements! Leslie was the guest speaker who was a member of the GSE team to visit Virginia last April. This was the first all ladies team and the four of them had a great experience judging by Leslie well presented report. The closure of the meeting was swiftly followed by our departure in a localised rain storm. By the time we reached the Marsh we were content in the knowledge that ours was still a 'great little club'.

16th Nov - Fri

Headway Quiz

Report:

Malcolm reported that despite the quizmaster being a fellow rotarian they were unable to achieve a higher place than third from the bottom. He gave no indication how far this position was from the top!

20th Nov - Tue

Day visit to France

Report:

Six rotarians chose a damp day to visit France and the selected venue of Arras proved to be ideal location. An excellent meal was had and with the support of a few beverages of local sweet ale the navigation home was accomplished without mishap

24th Nov - Sat

Bowls Evening

With two mats and any number of 'woods' to use the evening

was soon in full swing with much advice being given by those knowledgable members.

There was an opportunity for a quick committe meeting

But soon style and quality were on abundant display.

With a totally disorganised scoring system and nibbles and drinks a great time was had by all!

Thanks to Andrew, Ray and Suru for their organisation.

29th Nov - Thu

Ladies Night

Following a very pleasant meal and with Devonian humour, Carl Begwell, The Harbour Master, revealed the range of activities covered by the administration of Rye Harbour. With £500m passing through the port it was still suprising to see 350foot vessels being piloted up the river. Carl assured us that he never fell in when transferring! With verbal aplomb, Malcolm Sharp proposed the vote of thanks to bring to a close a most enjoyable Ladies Evening at the Littlestone Golf Club.

Ladies Evening at Lathe Barn- Dec 20th

With a nearly full attendance the club and their ladies enjoyed a convivial evening made more so in the knowledge that Dennis had to do the washing up! Thank you to the Lathe Barn team for a great meal.

Ladies Evening at Littlestone Golf Club - January 30th

President Roy presented a  £2000 cheque to the chairman, Roger Robinson of CARM (Caring Altogether on Romney Marsh). The co-ordinator, Karen Edmunds is clearly very pleased!

Following our excellent meal Karen outlined the work of CARM and in particular the Meeting Points around the Marsh. Over 300 people used the facilities every week and thanks to her band of over 100 volunteers many people gained great benefit.  An appeal was made for any befrienders to visit  isolated and housebound people, especially farmers!

Ray Moses gave the vote of thanks and commended the Appledore Meeting Point for the quality of its tea which he had personally tested.

Horse Racing Evening -  March 8th

For those of you reading this I must apologise that there are no photographs of this event...........entirely my own fault!

However, thanks to the hard work of the community committee and liason with Ray, the evening was a great success. With Gary Fagg on the bookmakers table the odds were quickly stacked against anyone winning except of course the charity "Make a Wish". A total of £520.

For those of you wondering how we could get all the horses inside the hall the answer is quite simple.  Come along to the next one!

 Cabaret Evening - April 19th

With the silky tones of Susan Smith giving a rendition of popular songs it was not lone before the dancing skills of the club were on display.

Star of the evening must be Rod and Linda with a display of freestyle dancing to a never ending irish jig! Well done.

A very enjoyable evening with funds raised  £294.

Thanks to Ian & Andrew for their hard work in promtoing and running the event.
