The Rotary Club of South Foreland, chartered in 1985, takes its name from the coastal strip (part of the White Cliffs of Dover) lying between Dover and Kingsdown, just south of Deal. The name is symbolized by the South Foreland Lighthouse, perched near the cliff edge near St Margaret’s Bay. The club has adopted the image of the South Foreland Lighthouse as its logo, from a drawing prepared by one of its founder members.
For a
centennial project, the club looked for a lasting community project. We discovered that the
South Foreland lighthouse, owned by the National Trust and a spectacular venue for visitors, was in need of a new ‘outside’ bench seat to replace one that was collapsing.
The plaque reads:
''This seat was provided on 23rd February 2005 by members of the Rotary Club of South Foreland to mark the centenary of the foundation of the Rotary movement on 23rd February 1905''

South Foreland Rotary) and Simon Ovenden (National
Trust) try out the new bench watched by Rotarians and
friends, plus the view from the bench. (photo:
