PRESS RELEASE

First funds distributed for successful Rotary Club collection

The first local charity to benefit from the Rotary Club of Whitstable’s Christmas Collection has been the TASH Disability Group who have been presented with a cheque for £300 part of the £4016 raised by the club through its collections at Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s stores before Christmas.

Speaking at the Rotary Club’s meeting on Tuesday evening, Christine Raynor the group’s organizer told members that “TASH, the Thursday Afternoon Self Help Group meets in St John’s Hall, Swalecliffe and was set up 12-years ago under the auspices of Social Services and Strode Park as a self help group for disabled adults. We currently have 15-18 members and its aims are that of helping each other and with matters relating to disablement, facilities for the disabled, talks relating to disablement, family matters and organising social gatherings, trips out and other events”.

Rotary Club President Norman Hollamby said “We are grateful to Christine for taking the time to come and speak to us this evening about the group and we are pleased to have been able to make a contribution to a local cause that does so much in improving the quality of life for those whose lives have been marred by disability”.

“The Annual Christmas Collection raised a fabulous amount thanks to the co-operation of Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s and it is our intention that this money will be distributed amongst various local causes as has been the tradition with this club for many years.  In addition the Rotary Club of Chestield raised a further £926 over the two days collecting allocated to them and they will distribute this to their own causes”.

“It is down to the generosity of the people of Whitstable and the surrounding area’s                                                                             that we have, between the two club’s, been able to raise this money and our thanks                                                                  go to them. They have shown that despite the recession the needs of others perhaps                                                                not so fortunate are still in people’s minds”.

Whitstable Rotarians Andy Page, Norman Hollamby (President) Neil Harrington and                                                                                   Andrew Gough present the cheque for £300 to Christine Raynor of TASH at the club’s                                                               meeting on Tuesday.    Rotary Club of Whitstable Charity ‘Gala Concert’ Evening

‘An evening of Romance’ is the promise on offer from the Rotary Club of Whitstable when they hold this year’s annual charity gala concert at the Whitstable Playhouse on Friday 12th February. It will mark a major change in the events programme - out goes the ‘proms’ style evening and in comes a new order.  However, what will not change is that it will feature the students from Kent Music formerly known as the Kent Music School.

Kim Foster has organized the event since its inception over a decade ago “It has been thought for some while that the evening was in need of a change and although the proms evening has been extremely popular, the club felt that the concert was in need of revitalization”

“It was with some trepidation that I broached the idea of a change with Kent Music’s Director, Kerry Boyle. To my surprise she was most enthusiastic for a change of direction and agreed to come up with a new programme which will incorporate the concert band and full orchestra. The students have already started rehearsing, although the details will be announced later”

“With the kind co-operation of the Lindley Players we have held our charity ‘Gala Concert’ for over a decade. Every year the students from Kent Music excel themselves with their performances.  Over the years our audiences have admired their ability, skill, professionalism and dedication. It is thanks to both the students and Kent Music that the Rotary Club of Whitstable’s ‘Gala Night’ has maintained its popularity and has been able to raise funds for numerous charities and causes. With a ‘new look’ we are looking to continue the trend this year”.

The majority of the Proceeds will go Kent Music and Rotary charities.

Tickets for the evening, which starts at 7.45 pm, are priced at £10.00 and are available from                                                                             the Whitstable Playhouse box office (open 10am-12.00 noon) at 104 High Street, Whitstable,                                                                            Tel: 01227 272042 or www.theplayhousewhitstable.co.uk
