How to get Across the Channel in 3 Easy Ways!

(February 9th 2008)

P&O have very kindly offered some places on one of the ferries crossing the Channel on February 9th next year and have promised to give us a central area for us to place  exercise machines to raise money for Charity. These charities have been chosen as Mercy Ships, Wheelchair Foundation and RNLI (requested by P&O).

Whitstable Rotary are organising the “race” starting as the ferry leaves the port and finishing when docking in Calais. We will then leave the machines on board and stay in France until the ship returns 4 hours (approx) later for it’s second return journey (giving us time for some liquid and solid refreshments – not too many though!.

Although there will be a small prize for each winner (both ways) the main objective is participation, not winning! It should be a great laugh! The reason why I mention this is that we do not have to be super fit (which Rotarians are? - just no heart attacks please!). The idea will be for you to submit a team of say 3/ 4 Rotarians who can row, cycle on run across the channel covering the greatest distance. There is no specific time per person – just when you are tired you can hand over to the next team member. If you keep going for 5 minutes or 20 minutes,  it is entirely up to you. Fancy dress a possibility!

We can raise money by sponsorship (you may keep this for your own charities)  but mainly by collecting donations on the day from fellow passengers.

We shall be advertising in local papers and hopefully the television and  radio.  P&O have promised to announce the event often on the ship’s public address system throughout the voyage.

We are arranging a large van to take the exercise machines on board (from Dover car park) but due to the difficulty in getting sufficient machines we are asking if you can communicate with your local fitness club, members etc to see if they can donate one for you to use for the day. This is also why we have opened it up for cycle, rowing and running machines – more choice, more availability!

You can download an entry form below. Obviously we shall have to limit numbers – so last in, first out, if we are too many! Team members “relaxing” can help collecting with the buckets and at present you are allowed helpers  but we shall have to reduce these if our numbers grow too large.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by phone or email or even snail mail!  This could be a great event that generates a good laugh (probably quite a few of them), some good publicity and hopefully a lot of money, not to mention the  good fellowship!
